The mystery oil change, round two
I have 3000 miles to figure it out, was where we last left our hero. Lessons learned to date, oil is hot. Oil burns. Change oil when oil is cool. Drive vehicle up on top of cinder blocks. This will allow room to place the 5 gallon oil container directly under the drain plug. Careful not to drop the oil drain plug into the container.
Hurrah! Success, lukewarm oil flows directly from the oil pan into the container with hardly a drop landing on the clean cement driveway! Victory at last. Re-install drain plug.
Now with the truck up on cinder blocks, it's not possible to reach the oil filter. Transmission lever to Neutral and the truck rolls back down off the blocks.
You'll recall from the previous experience, one of the nice features of the Cummins is the fact that the oil filter is easily accessible and is mounted with the opening at the top. This will keep the oil from running out when it is removed.
Darn, filter is kinda tighter than usual. Mighty twist and it's loose. As it is unscrewed from the housing, oil, under pressure, squirts from the gasket, runs down the filter housing and puddles in the driveway. When tipping the filter slightly to remove it, not a problem in the past more oil runs to the ground.
Lengthy cleanup process continues amid the warm fall sunshine. Amid the silence of this Veteran's day, it is possible to hear the female rabbit eating wallboard in the garage.
